Farmer's Guide to Carbon Markets

At recent County Conventions, many MFU members raised questions and concerns about carbon markets, which are active around the state and at the center of many climate conversations in Washington D.C. What constitutes a good deal? What should I watch out for in contracts with companies? What if I’m already implementing conservation practices on my land?

MFU is partnering with experts at the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) and Farmers Legal Action Group (FLAG) to bring legal and policy expertise to farmers about possible opportunities or pitfalls in the carbon marketplace. Together, we are creating a practical, farmer-informed guide to assist farmers in navigating the current markets offerings.

The Farmer’s Guide to Carbon Markets will be modeled after MFU’s existing guide on solar and wind energy. To ensure the guide is practical, grounded, and helpful to growers, partners will engage an advisory group of farmers. Minnesota Farmers Union is motivated to respond directly to our members’ concerns, empower new farmer-leaders on climate, and to advance solutions on agricultural and working lands.
