39th Annual Farm Picnic
August 18, 2019 @ 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm
Greater Minnesota’s tough year in agriculture and high health care costs will be respectively addressed by Commissioner of Agriculture Thom Petersen and the Chairman of Health Care for All Minnesota, Dr. Mark Brakke, MD, at the 39th Annual Farm Picnic on Sunday, Aug. 18, 1 p.m., at Pierz Park in Pierz.
Leading up to Farmfest, Commissioner Petersen has been reminding the public that a lot of farmers are having a hard time. Commodity prices have been decreasing for six years. A punishing winter, rainy spring and the ongoing U.S.-China trade war have made this year stressful for many in agriculture.
Adding to the distressed farm economy is unaffordable health care, which has been repeatedly brought up at Minnesota Farmers Union’s Rural Voices Discussions for three years now. Dr. Mark Brakke will address this by relating his extensive observation of corporate medicine during stints on Allina committees and HealthPartners board of directors.
Minnesota COACT and Morrison County Farmers Union co-sponsor the Farm Picnic which annually celebrates family farming and Main Street businesses as pillars of the rural economy.
Serving of the traditional country dinner of ham, sweet corn, and potato salad begins at 1 p.m. The MFU-NFO Direct Marketing Program is providing the ham, and the Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls are offering the potato salad, fresh-baked bread and garden vegetables. Morrison County Dairy Princesses will serve milk and ice cream.
Free tickets, compliments of local businesses, are available at businesses displaying Farm Picnic posters and will be available at the Picnic.
