Minnesota Farmers Union to hold 77th Annual Convention Nov. 16-18, celebrating 100 years of Farmers Union in Minnesota
Oct. 11, 2018
Minnesota Farmers Union (MFU) will hold its 77th Annual Convention on Nov. 16-18 at Delta Hotels by Marriott Minneapolis Northeast.
The main business of the convention is to debate and pass MFU policy, which comes directly from resolutions from MFU members, and elect delegates to represent Minnesota at the National Farmers Union (NFU) Convention in Bellevue, Wash., March 2-5, 2019.
“For 77 consecutive years, our members have come together to decide what Farmers Union should advocate for,” MFU President Gary Wertish said. “It’s how we develop our grassroots policy: Our members have submitted their resolutions at county meetings. We’ll debate at the state level what will become part of our policy, which guides what we work on with the State Legislature and Congress.
“We encourage our members to attend and speak up for policies that will improve life for family farmers and rural residents.”
This convention is special because it marks 100 years since the first Farmers Union chapter in Minnesota was established. The Rost Center Local in Jackson County was that first chapter. We will recognize and celebrate this joyful occasion during the Saturday night banquet, which will feature showings of family farm videos created for the Farmers Union Coffee Shop at the Minnesota State Fair. These videos show the history of our organization and how it works for family farmers still today.
“Our organization has grown and evolved over the past 100 years, from a small group of dedicated farmers in southwest Minnesota to a statewide network,” President Wertish said. “We will remember all we’ve accomplished this year at convention.”
The convention will also include Minnesota-grown meals; silent and live fundraiser auctions benefiting the MFU Foundation and MFUPAC; and informational breakout sessions. Speakers will include NFU President Roger Johnson; Minnesota Farm Service Agency Director Joe Martin; and Minnesota Department of Agriculture Senior Advisor for Strategy and Innovation Meg Moynihan. Several state and federal elected officials and staff are expected to attend.
The convention officially begins with a reception sponsored by MFU and Farmers Union Insurance Agency on Nov. 16 at 6:30 p.m.
A tentative agenda is available here. All convention activities will be held at Delta Hotels by Marriott Minneapolis Northeast, 1330 Industrial Boulevard, Minneapolis. There is no cost to attend, but meals are ticketed events and RSVP is required. The public is welcome to attend and may register at http://77thmfuconvention.eventbrite.com.
